Tea, cake and cucumber sandwiches!

With the fantastic weather we are currently enjoying could you organise a 40 minute afternoon tea party in your community?

You need a venue, or a table in the sun. Sandwiches and cake. Plus an endless supply of tea. And maybe a couple of friends to give you a hand.

Charge everyone a minimum of a fiver and donate the profits to LearnAsOne.

Here are some posters you can download to help you promote your tea party.

Tell your Mum and Dad about the campaign.

Are you going to see your Mum and Dad, or friends and family, over the next few days?

If so, will you please take five minutes of your time to tell them about LearnAsOne and the 40 minute fundraise?

You could show them Simakakata Community School in 19 photos or share the Day in the Life of Saviour video. Saviour is one of the children who attends the school and she walks over four hours every day to attend her lessons.

If your family want to help out then please point them in the direction of the 40 minute fundraise.

Thanks!

Washing up

Could these be your tools for the 40 minute fundraise? (Photo credit: fras1977, Flickr)

Will you auction 40 minutes of your time to the highest bidder?

They get to choose what you do.

You could end up cutting the grass, cleaning toilets, doing the washing up, lugging a heavy load. Whatever the auction winner fancies.

You can keep it simple and restrict your auction to friends and family, or offer it to the entire office. It’s completely up to you.

And if you end up in any amusing situations then let us know and we’ll feature the best on the blog.

Good luck!

Sports and education go hand in hand

Sports and education go hand in hand.

Football is a massive part of life at Simakakata Community School.

“Children who don’t perform well in class may be much better at sports,” says Edwin, the PE teacher, “It’s a great way of motivating them and increasing their confidence.”

Sports classes take place on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons in a field behind the school.

Although they only have a few balls to play with and no kit, Edwin tries to organise football matches against other schools as often as he can.

“It’s very important for the children to be exposed to other communities through sport,” he says, “And when we don’t win, it teaches them to try harder and work together as a team to improve themselves.”

Football is also a great way to bring your friends together to raise some money for badly needed classrooms and teachers’ houses at the school. Could you organise a small 5-a-side tournament to raise some cash?

How to organise a 40 minutes football fundraiser

20 players. 4 teams. 10 minutes per match. Everyone plays each other once. The top 2 teams play each other in the final.

If you charge everyone £5 to enter then you make £100.

With the super weather at the moment you could host the tournament in your local park. Why not invite your friends and family down to watch, and ask someone to run a fundraising BBQ alongside the tournament to raise even more money?

You can download a poster to promote your event here. If you have any questions please leave them below.

Thanks!

Gym session

How would your local gym like some publicity in the local press?

Ask them if they will donate on a 40 minute aerobics session with all the money raised going to Simakakata Community School.

You can either set a fixed price for the session or allow people to donate what they like.

And if you generate lots of demand then consider taking the instructor out of the gym and partnering with a local school or using the Community Hall so more people can enjoy the session.

Get active and get fundraising!

Curry. Yum!

Curry. Yum! (Photo credit: beketchai, Flickr)

Curry. Tasty curry!

A very simple idea for you today.

Ask your local curry house if you can run a 40 minute, all you can eat, curry extravaganza.

How to organise a 40 minute curry fundraiser

  • Pick a night when the your favourite curry house is normally quiet (e.g. a Tuesday).
  • Pop in and explain the 40 minute idea to the manager.Everyone gets a plate. The curry house provides food to every table for 40 minutes. Guest can fill their plates as often as they like during the 40 minutes. Once the 40 minutes are up the remaining food is taken away except for the food on the customers plates which they can eat at their leisure.
  • Negotiate hard on price. You’ll be bringing paying customers to their restaurant on a quiet night. Everyone is likely to buy a couple of drinks too and the curry house can tell the local paper and get themselves some publicity. You have a strong negotiating position.
  • Add a mark-up onto the price agreed. Maybe £5.
  • Sell tickets.

An example

You negotiate £7 per head. Charge £12 a ticket in advance, £15 on the door. Invite people (Facebook events and email are often a good way to do this). Make sure there is a simple way to buy tickets. Say you sell 30 tickets in advance and 10 on the door. That’s (30×5) + (10×8) = £230 raised!

If you can sell more tickets then do so. And if you can rustle up enough guests there should be time for two sittings in one night (e.g. 7pm and 9pm).

Posters

Feel free to make your own poster to promote the event. Or you can click here to download one of our free posters.

You can offer these to the curry house too. All their customers will see the event which is great promotion for them and also for LearnAsOne. And it’ll probably help you shift a few tickets as well! Win all round.

36 swimmers. 40 minutes each. You have yourself a 24-hour swimathon.

It could be a perfect way to raise money with your classmates or friends.

There are plenty of variations of course. Swim in pairs. Everyone swims at the same time. Less swimmers. Make the challenge harder by insisting everyone does butterfly for the full 40 minutes.

Lady in stocks

How many sponges could you take in 40 minutes? (Photo credit: Kiwi Lomo, Flickr)

How many people do you know who would like to throw a wet sponge at you?

Your mum? Your workmates? Your teacher? Your friends? Probably quite a few.

The more annoying you are, the more money you are likely to raise!

You can charge people per throw and you can also get sponsored too.

For example, you could suggest £1 a throw and 50p sponsorship per minute in the stocks.

All you need is to work out where the nearest set of stocks are. Or failing that get someone to tie you to a tree. Get a couple of buckets, 3/4 sponges and make sure you are near a hosepipe so the water doesn’t run out.

Then arrange a date – coordinating your soaking with a village fete works well. Think up a name – something like ‘Soak the Sucker’ or ’40 minutes of sponge pain’. And then take your punishment.

Fundraising tip: This idea also works well as a challenge. A local celebrity, the mayor, your sports coach or teacher will all have a big queue of people waiting to pay for a sponge.
